Hey! Welcome to Lucky Grape – and if you’ve found your way here, chances are you’re curious (or obsessed) with natural wine. Good. You’re in the right place.
But what is natural wine, exactly? It’s buzzy, it’s cloudy, it’s sometimes a little funky, but there’s more to it than just being the cool kid at the wine bar. Let’s break it down in 5 easy, no-nonsense points:
🍇 1. Grapes. Just grapes.
Natural wine starts in the vineyard. We’re talking organically or biodynamically grown grapes, no synthetic pesticides, no chemical fertilisers. The vines are looked after the way they’ve been for centuries: with a little love and a lot of patience.
🧪 2. No weird additives.
Most commercial wines have a long ingredients list (even if you never see it). Natural winemakers keep it simple, no added yeasts, no lab-made flavourings, no crazy enzymes. Just grape juice doing its thing.
🌀 3. Wild fermentation = wild flavours.
Instead of lab-grown yeast, natural wines ferment with the wild yeasts that live on the grape skins and in the air. That can make things a little unpredictable, but also way more exciting. Earthy, funky, bright, sour, it’s a vibe.
👀 4. It might look a little hazy.
Natural wine isn’t filtered or fined, which means it can be cloudy or have bits in the bottle. Totally normal. Totally drinkable. It’s like OJ with bits, you know it’s the real deal.
🎉 5. It’s all about character.
Natural wine is alive. It’s not trying to be polished or perfect, it’s expressive, unique, and sometimes a little weird (in the best way). If you want consistency, stick with supermarket pinot. If you want adventure, you’re one of us.
That’s the gist! We’re here to celebrate the people, places and stories behind natural wine, and crack open some killer bottles along the way. Let’s drink some weird stuff together.
Cheers!
